Bioreactor-on-a Chip: Application to Baker’s Yeast Fermentation
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a miniaturized bioreactor (bioreactor-on-a-chip) applied to baker’s yeast fermentation. The bioreactor-on-a-chip is fabricated using a silicon and glass wafers applying micromachining technology (wet-etching techniques) in order to create microchannels, mixerchannels, microvalves. The miniaturization and integration allows smaller volumes to be used, which can be often rather challenging from the analytical point of view. Also, optical detection by absorption, electrochemical detection using microelectrodes and membranes are used. Moreover, electroanalytical techniques used in bioelectrochemistry (e.g. microdialysis, capillary electrophoresis and HPLC) are employed. Experimental results obtained from a macro laboratory set-up with a five-liter fermenter and on-line measurement of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and ethanol, and exhausted gases analyses are available. Biomass and glucose concentrations are estimated on-line by observation algorithms and confirmed by off-line measurements. An ethanol set-point control is implemented.

Baker’s yeast production under fed batch culture from apple pomace
Apple pomace extract (APE) in aerobic variable fed batch culture under standardized fermentation parameters was evaluated for the production of baker’s yeast. The substrate was fed at a flow rate of 0.39 dm h to regulate fermentable sugar concentration between 1-2 % in bioreactor. An average specific growth rate of 0.24 h and cellular yield coefficient of 0.48 g/g sugar was obtained during bake...

A membrane bioreactor (MBR) system based on a dead-end immersed hollow fiber membrane and filamentous fungus Aspergillus oryzae were used for treatment of baker’s yeast wastewater. The fungus was adapted to the wastewater in the bioreactor for two weeks before starting the continuous process. Average organic loading rate of 4.2 kg COD/m3.d was entered the bioreactor. MBR system was able to redu...
متن کاملFault Diagnosis in a Yeast Fermentation Bioreactor by Genetic Fuzzy System
In this paper, the fuzzy system has been used for fault detection and diagnosis of a yeast fermentation bioreactor based on measurements corrupted by noise. In one case, parameters of membership functions are selected in a conventional manner. In another case, using certainty factors between normal and faulty conditions the optimal values of these parameters have been obtained through the g...
متن کاملProduction and Comparison of Indigenous and Commercial Baker’s Yeasts
89 Introduction Baker’s yeast is used to leaven bread throughout the world and it is the type of yeast that people are most familiar with1-2. Commercial baker’s yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) are mostly used for the fermentation of modern bread making3. These yeast products contain almost 5% contaminating lactic bacteria and these bacteria play an important role in the production of flavour ...
متن کاملOptimization of A Fed-Batch Fermenter Producing Bakerâs Yeast Using Simulated Annealing Method
Modeling of fermentation processes is so complicated and uncertain; therefore it is necessary to provide a robust and appropriate dynamic optimization method. In order to obtain the maximum amount of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the bioreactor must be operated under optimal conditions. To determine substrate feeding in a fed-batch bioreactor, a simulated annealing (SA) approach was examine...
